Madhur Sangeet of Gurudas

Madhur Sangeet comprises a collection of songs composed by Sri Sri Gurudas ji on various occasions throughout his lifetime. Just a few days after Gurudasji’s initiation (on 17 Sep 1967), Mounibaba had predicted that he would compose numerous songs and poems in the future, and would be celebrated as a spiritual poet. He also foresaw that Gurudas would write and publish many books. Although Gurudasji initially chuckled at this notion and didn’t believe it, he was astounded to witness its realization after a few years.

On the 9th of February 1972, during his usual commute to the office, Gurudasji experienced a profound moment. Passing by the Hari Mandir in Imphal, he was suddenly overwhelmed with intense emotion and a surge of devotion enveloped his entire being. Tears of love streaming down his face, he reached for his packet of cigarettes and penned the song that had sprung to his mind. Sharing his creation with a colleague at the office, he was met with joyous approval. “Ketaki, you have become a poet now!” exclaimed his colleague, who then invited Gurudasji to his home that evening. There, with the assistance of his wife on the harmonium, Gurudasji sang the song, moving everyone present to tears as they engaged in kirtan.

Gurudasji’s life underwent a remarkable transformation in Imphal. Strings of poems began overflowing his mind, and he found himself writing incessantly. At times, he even composed more than ten songs in a single day, transforming him into a Sadhak Kavi like Ramprasad and Narottam. His compositions covered various topics such as Guru Tattva, his guru Mounibaba, Shiva Tattva, Radha Krishna Yugal Bhajan Tattva, Shakti Tattva, Hindi Bhajan, patriotic songs, philosophical songs, yoga tattva, Gour Nitai, etc.

Mounibaba used to deeply admire his songs and said, “God is writing these songs through Gurudas.” Hence this entire collection of his compositions should be termed as “Madhur Sangeet,” since these songs inspire Madhur Bhava within sadhaka. Mounibaba used to sink in Prema Samadhi when Gurudas used to sing his sweet songs with full devotion. In fact, both guru and disciple used to be in a state of samadhi at times. A wave of transcendental ocean of bliss used to come from infinity and encapsulate both the persons and the surrounding ones. Those who sing these songs or even just read these songs literally gain tremendous spiritual credits and are bound to self-introspect for self-realization. Gurudas humbly says that all these compositions are actually the divine wealth and property of Mounibaba, which is given to Gurudas because of deep love and compassion. Hence Gurudas asks us to preserve this transcendental wealth with us and one day these will be celebrated across the world as “Gurudasi Madhur Sangeet”.

Gurudas always tells that he has find the perfect human and the most perfect Vaishnav in his dear guru, Sri Sri Mounibaba. He says that at times, Mounibaba used to absorbed completely in Radha Bhava, just like the Maha Bhav of Mahaprabhu during his time. His activities at time was very hard for anyone to comprehend anything. Though it was revelaed only to Gurudas, Kushi and Gurudasi, since they were the intimate disciples and associate of Sadguru Prema Avatar Mounibaba. Again at times, he used to advice others including Gurudas to control these spiritual transcendental emotions and conceal these greatly from public, else display of any such behaviour at general mass would result in destruction only and all spiritual gains so far from whole life would lost in a moment. So the sadhak must be very careful.

It is to be mentioned that such songs are composed by Gurudas at times, only when he experienced something new in his spiritual journey. For example, the song on “Shesh Tattva” or the ending tattva, namely “Antare Baje go Binay” is an epic creation and shows the legendary attainments of a Gurudas classic! Mounibaba greatly appreciated this song and told this is actually the conclusion of all yoga and the end itself. The song can be interpreted in many ways, and transcendentally all interpretations would be correct. But the innermost meaning says about the journey of a qualified sadhaka, taking his kundalini from Mooladhar to Sahasrara. In this journey, he attains many experiences including the inherent sounds of Anahat Naad like the sound of bees, drums, mridanga, kartal, roaring of the ocean, and many others followed by the flute sound of Sri Krishna in the end. The sadhaka simultaneously listens to the spontaneous vibration of the guru mantra and omkar. Sometimes, he is blessed to witness kirtan happening inside him, just like the days of Mahaprabhu. In such conditions, the mood of Vrindavan like gopis especially that of Radharani manifests, and the sadhaka gets immersed in divine love, searching for her beloved Sri Krishna, who is giving a signal by the music of his flute from a kadamba tree. Finally, the prem goes to extreme and merges in the infinite ocean of Nirvikalpa Samadhi. Hence this is the shesh tattva!
